Whether named for the founder’s birthplace or a combination of the French words for “father” and “town,” Abbeville exudes old-world charm in the heart of south Louisiana. Founder Pere Megret, inspired by the small French towns from his childhood, built Abbeville out from a timeless anchor called Magdelen Square, with a large gazebo and charming fountain around which the community would gather. Locals continue to come to ”The Square'' to enjoy such diverse celebrations as Sounds on the Square, the Louisiana Cattle Festival, Christmas Stroll and Cajun Christmas Celebration, and its famous Giant Omelette Celebration where French chefs from other countries join locals to prepare a 5,000-egg delicacy for the town to enjoy.

A couple of blocks to the west of the square sits the headquarters of Steen’s Cane Syrup, unmistakable due to the three large storage tanks painted to look like the syrup containers found on grocery store shelves. If you’re looking for a bit more traditional architecture, check out the Greek Revival structure housing the Vermilion Parish Courthouse.

The Vermilion River which borders downtown was an early route to the gulf and is still today a delivery system for a local culinary favorite, oysters. And SHUCKS! is a local preference; but other culinary options include steak and seafood and authentic Italian, all with a Cajun flair, to honor the town’s heritage. The Acadiens sought refuge here when they were expelled from Nova Scotia, and a visit to the Abbeville Cultural & Heritage Center tells this story.
