New Roads Main Street
Home of the second-oldest Mardi Gras celebrations in the state, New Roads invites everyone to “come for the culture, and stay for the sunsets.” One of the best ways to learn about the area’s rich history is on two wheels! Download the Historic Bike Trail map and cruise for 11 miles along False River, taking in the French and Caribbean architecture of many of the homes including the birthplace of author Ernest J. Gaines. If you’re feeling really adventurous, turn that bike ride into a nearly thirty-mile-jaunt by going completely around the oxbow lake via LA 1 and LA 413.
If you’re not quite up to a bike ride around the great outdoors, the town also offers some great antique shopping. With multiple stalls offering everything from collectibles to accessories to hand-crafted gifts (and everything in between!), the New Roads Antique Mall is the place to be. If you couldn’t find what you’re looking for, something at The Pointe Mercantile will strike your fancy with their extensive selection of handmade artisan pieces and gift ideas. Just don’t forget to stop at Dough & Joe for gourmet donuts and specialty coffees to refuel between antiquing adventures!
Whether you’ve spent the day enjoying nature or finding that oh-so-perfect antique to complement your house décor, head over to Morel’s Restaurant for some decadent Crawfish Julie or a hearty Bayou Blue Po'boy.
New Roads also plays host year-round to a number of festivals and events, such as Wine Down on False River, Boo and Brew and Holiday Market at the Mill. With these events, along with farmers markets and pop-up art shows, there’s always something happening for every visitor!
